Guest posting means writing an article for another publication. Done well it introduces your expertise to a relevant audience. Done badly, it is the kind of link scheme search engines have warned about for years.
What a good guest post looks like
- It is written for the host site’s readers, not for a link.
- It contains something new: data, a worked example, a point of view.
- It is edited, fact-checked and clearly attributed to a real author.
- Links are few, relevant and useful to the reader.
Paid placements and disclosure
If money or free products are exchanged for a placement, the article should be labelled as sponsored and any commercial links should use rel="sponsored". Hiding payment is the fastest way to lose trust with readers and risk action from search engines.
Be wary of promises. Any service that guarantees rankings, traffic or a specific number of backlinks is overstating what it controls.
How to evaluate a site before pitching
- Read five recent posts. Would you be proud to appear beside them?
- Check the audience fit with your topic.
- Look for editorial standards and visible authors.
- Confirm how links and sponsored content are labelled.
